The Day After

Well, it's the day after Thanksgiving and all has settled down around the Miller household. My dad just left to go back up to Spartanburg and then he'll go home tomorrow. We had our family of 5, my dad and my husband's family here. In all, 11 enjoyed the Thanksgiving feast. It's something how it takes hours and hours to put together and only 10 minutes to demolish it. But we enjoyed it all.

We'll be seeing my dad in about 3 weeks as we are going to Disneyworld for Christmas this year. I'm glad he's able to go with us. We've been to Disney a number of times, but I've never been at Christmas. I've seen shows on the Travel Channel and it really looks neat. Only thing I'm not great at handling is crowds.
Can't wait to see the Grand Floridian's foyer. I've heard it's gorgeous! Can't wait to see it. We've been saving up for this trip for a couple of years now.

Dreamfields pasta

As I mention earlier, I'm having to watch my blood sugar. Thanks Valerie for your encouragement. I've been watching my sugar intake and so far I've lost about 10 lbs. Of course we all know what THIS week entails don't we......

Anyway, I've discovered this low carb pasta from Dreamfields. It says that it has only 5 grams of digestible carbs in each serving. We had some tonight and it was pretty good. So I may be using that as my pasta of choice from now on. Now this is not to say I'm going to eat loads of it every day or anything, but it sure is nice to have something that you enjoy eating and it being good for you as well as good to eat.

50 years!

On Sunday, November 23rd, my family and I went to Spartanburg to share in our friend's celebration of their 50th anniversary. My parents have known them for 48 years. I just want to wish them more years of marriage. God has truly blessed them during their marriage.

Here is a great picture we took while we were there. This is Joe and Judy, the happy couple, dancing.
My dad came down from Arkansas to be with them, and he will visit with them for a few days and then come down here where we live to spend Thanksgiving with us. I'm thrilled that he's able to come!
God bless you Joe and Judy! We love you and pray you'll have many more years of blessings.

The 'D' Word

Diabetes. That word always scared me and I even felt sorry for those who were diabetic. I knew some people who had to take shots and I thought to myself, I'd never be able to do that.
With my 3rd child, I had gestational diabetes. I controlled it with diet and exercise. I had a wonderful neighbor lady, Tammy, who would walk with me in the mornings. In fact, she helped me with my first finger prick test. I remember sitting at my kitchen table with the lancet in one hand and holding my f inger out and trying to get up the courage to poke myself. Well, I couldn't do it, so I waddled as quickly as I could to my neighbor and asked her for help. So the next time, I was able to do it myself.

Now 11 years later, I am close to being diabetic, but not there yet. My doctor says I have to watch my sugar intake, and of course take it easy on the carbs. (sigh) I guess I can do that, but it sure is hard with Thanksgiving and Christmas right here. Everytime I go to the store, I see all kinds of goodies and treats. Why is it that we long for something we can't or shouldn't have moreso than when it doesn't matter if we have it?

But I know I need to keep my blood sugar levels in check. I need to be healthy for my family. But I do look forward to that day in heaven when I'll be perfect, in mind and in body.

One of my favorite shows

This has got to be one of THE best shows ever shown! My family loves A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. I find myself humming the music to it, especially at the end of it. I think I will be watching it sometime this week. We have the trio of Charlie Brown DVD's. On Halloween we watched It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown.
.
I've always wondered how a dog could make a Thanksgiving feast, but an even more interesting question is that Woodstock would eat the turkey too. Now that's just weird.
.
Last night I was flipping through the TV and we saw How the Grinch Stole Christmas. There sure are some very nostalgic shows out there.
.
Another favorite of ours is Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Of course we laugh at it now, especially when Donner tells Rudolph's mom, "No! This is man's work!" Yeah, and we can see she really listened to him. Ahhh, silver and gold, silver and gold..... We'll be watching that one soon too.
.
My husband's all time favorite Christmas movie is Scrooge, the old version with Alistair Sims. I think my favorite would be Miracle on 34th St., also the older version. You just can't beat a good, decent and clean movie, sitting in front of the fire with boy scout popcorn at your side.

Brain Age

I recently bought a Nintendo DS and I also got the Brain Age game and Brain Age 2. Let me tell ya... I thought I was old at 42. Imagine you testing yourself and it says your brain is 80!! But then again, it is sooooo addicting! I find myself on it everyday checking my age and playing Sudoku. I'm still not great at it, but I'm plugging away and enjoying trying to figure things out. Today, it said my brain age was 24! Woooh! Go me! Go me! Now watch, tomorrow it'll be 70 or something.
Goodnight now!

Close to Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is my favorite time of year, because fall is my favorite time of year. I just can't believe how quickly this year has flown by, well, except for whenever I turned on the news and it was nothing but the election for months and months. I'm sort of glad it's over, even though my candidate didn't win. I'll be praying for our new president and for our leaders.

Next Sunday we will be heading up to Spartanburg, SC to celebrate a 50 year anniversary with a couple who have been friends with my parents for about that long. They are a wonderful couple who have stood by my parents since they met. They even came to my mom's funeral and I was touched. I want to say Congratulations Joe and Judy, on 50 years of marriage. In this day and age, it's a rare thing to see a couple last that long. My own parents were so close to it before my mom passed away.

My dad is flying down for their anniversary, and then he's coming to visit us and will be spending Thanksgiving with us. I'm very excited about that. Our friends, Joe and Judy, think he's just coming down to visit for the holiday. Their kids are keeping it secret that there's going to be a party for them. I know they'll be surprised!

My husband's parents will also come on over for Thanksgivng and our son Marcus will come home so I'll have a housefull of people here. I'm getting a fried turkey as well as a traditional one. We love fried turkey, but I'm scared to try frying one here at the house, so Piggly Wiggly is selling fried turkeys.

Blogger is messing up on me so I'll end it here. God bless and have a great evening.

Going to Medieval Times!

Tomorrow we will be going with Nathan's scout troop to Myrtle Beach to the Medieval Times. We are all looking forward to it and I'm sure my hubby will take pictures. We've never been because of the price, but it's one of their scout appreciation days and so we got a discount.

Nathan has been sick this week with a bad cold, but he is getting better. We only did school for 2 days this week since he was under the weather. I'm just praying no one else catches it.

I am looking forward to Thanksgiving, always my favorite time of year. Gives me an excuse to stuff myself. My dad will be coming down and we are all looking forward to his visit.

Now just trying to process the election results. I am in prayer for our nation, and our leaders and that's all I'm going to say about that right now.

Surprised??

Here I am again, trying to learn my way around this blog. It's been quite some time since I last posted and alot has happened since then. Our son, who is now 19 was admitted to the home I spoke about last time I posted. He lives with four other young men and there are several people who take care of them. He seems very content and well taken care of. We are able to get him whenever we want since he only lives a few miles away. It's worked out wonderfully, definately an answer to prayers.
.
All was going well with us until I got the call at around 8 pm from my father, on December 17, 2007. My mom had just passed away. My heart crumbled at hearing those words. No, I wasn't ready for this. I cried and cried. Oh, I knew that she didn't have long since they had just found out she had stage IV lung cancer, apparently getting it from cancer being on her kidneys several years prior. She was on dialysis for this. Her fistual in her arm had burst and she couldn't stop the bleeding. She tried to call 911, but they didn't make it in time.
.
Funny thing is, we were about to come and spend Christmas with them. We were only 5 days away from seeing them. For the next 10 days I was numb. I went with my family and stayed with Dad. My brother lives near my dad and we had some cousins come for the funeral as well as one of her brothers. It was a bittersweet Christmas and didn't feel like Christmas for the most part. At her funeral though 5 people were saved! She loved Jesus Christ with all of her heart and although I miss her alot, I know she is with Him right now! I praise the Lord for His goodness and mercy towards her, especially near the end. I couldn't imagine her suffering any more than she had with cancer. She had Crohn's disease since she was 16. She died a couple of months before their 50th anniversary. I can't wait to see her again when the Lord comes for His Bride!
